MOSCOW DOMODEDOVO AIRPORT (DME) INFORMATION

Domodedovo Mikhail Lomonosov International Airport, Московский аэропорт Домоде́дово in Russian, is one of the four major airports in Moscow, located 42 km/26 mi south-southeast of the capital’s centre. The airport is more commonly known as Moscow Domodedovo Airport as it was its name up until the end of 2019 when a presidential decree and a contest added the name of the Russian scientist Mikhail Lomonosov to it. It is a single terminal airport serving both domestic and international flights and is the second biggest airport in Russia having served 29,403,704 passengers in 2018.

The airport is located in the Domodedovo area in the Moscow region, hence the name Moscow Domodedovo Airport.

Survey work on the construction began in 1948, and preparatory work on construction in 1951, with the official birthday being 7th of April, 1962, but wasn’t officially opened for passenger traffic until May, 1965 with the intention of long-distance domestic flights. Between April, 1962 and May, 1965 the airport served mostly flights by postal and cargo planes.

18 months after the opening a second runway, parallel to the first runway, was in service.

During the early 1990’s East Line Group, founded by entrepreneurs Anton Bakov and Dmitry Kamnschik invested in several facilities at the airport, including a new customs terminal and catering services. They privatized the facilities in late 1996 and formed JSC International Airport Domodedovo. The runways, air traffic control and communications facilities are formally on a lease to the subsidiary of East Line Group since 1998.

East Line Group, with the strategic goal of stabilizing the airport’s future and establishing it as an important international and multi-modal transportation hub invested heavily in reconstruction and modernization during the late 1990’s and 2000’s and as a result the airport complex reached a capacity of 6,000 passengers per hour in 2000. By 2009 the renovated terminal and airport facilities attracted airlines such as British Airways, Lufthansa, Japan Airline, China Eastern Airlines, Austrian Airlines and Vietnam Airlines to move their flights from another major international Moscow airport to Moscow Domodedovo Airport. Since then a terminal has been built and all traffic is now going through that terminal. This was done in preparations for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Today the airport has 3 runways, two surfaced with cement-concrete of 3,500 m/11,483 ft. and 3,800 m/12,467 ft. respectively, and one surfaced with reinforced concrete of 2,370 m/7,776 ft. During 2018 the airport registered 234,700 aircraft movements.

The nearest international airport is the Vnukovo International Airport (VKO) located approximately 56 km/35 mi northeast of Moscow Domodedovo Airport, and 31 km/19.26 mi southwest of Moscow city center.

Moscow Domodedovo Airport (DME) has a variety of duty free shops, restaurants, cafés and bars, some found in the common areas on land-side, but most on air-side following check-in and pre-flight security control. Free WiFi (DME_free) is available in the passenger areas DME. Once connected, choose a browser and a website and follow the instructions through the identification process.
